Calpurnia

Calpurnia is the coloured cook of the Finch family. She is treated more like a mother than a slave and is quite harsh on the children sometimes. She is closest with Scout as she is the younger child and spends more of her time with Calpurnia while Jem plays with Dill or helps Atticus. During this time she teaches Scout to write, which gets Scout in trouble with Ms. Caroline. Atticus is a very fair man and treats Calpurnia with respect, as though she is another member of their family. When Aunt Alexandra suggests getting rid of Calpurnia, Atticus stands up for her and states that she is not only there because they need her help, she is also there because they love her.
