Charles Baker "Dill" Harris

Picture
Charles Baker "Dill" Harris is Jem and Scout’s summer neighbor and friend. Dill is an small, confident boy with a lively imagination. Throughout the novel Dill's fascination with Boo Radley grows and he is often thinking up wicked plans to try and make the forlorn man inside the house show himself. He is a representation of the perspective of childhood innocence throughout the novel.
His character is similar to Harper Lee's friend Truman Capote.
Truman Capote and Harper Lee met when they were children and remained lifelong friends. They grew up together and instead of watching movies or playing like regular children they would go and watch Harper Lee's father, who was a lawyer, fight his court cases. Truman Capote has also based some of the characters in his books on Harper Lee.
